ROOM 3 - 1ST POST

One of the appendices included in my book Nightmare USA is the 'Exploitation Independent Checklist'. On it are all of the films covered in the book, plus those to be included in Volume 2 and any others I could think of which fitted the template - i.e. independently produced horror films made in the USA between 1970 and 1985. I think we all love a list, so I've decided to begin this blog by reprinting it here. There are 472 films on it, of which I've seen a woefully unhealthy 335. The sunlight hurts my eyes and I rarely go out. How many have you seen?

  1. Great list. I just spotted Psycho From Texas, and it brings back disturbing memories of watching a humiliated Linnea Quigley getting doused in beer. Nasty stuff ! Really looking forward to Nightmare USA II. Thanks, Wes

  2. A woefully unhealthy 333, Stephen?! I hate to say it, but I've only seen a measley 102! Some of those, though, are due to your book Nightmare USA. These include Homebodies, The Jar, Death Bed, Centerforld Girls, The Child and Axe. Fantastic. Oh, and Messiah of Evil is on order. Do I get extra points for having seen some of these in the theatre?

I'm looking forward to Vol 2 as well, though I'm scared about what it may do to my bank account when I try to collect the films in the second volume. Now if I could only get my hands on Sex Wish!

    Glad you're blogging now...

  3. I've only seen 163 of them.

  4. Should I be ashamed that I have seen almost ever single one of these at one time or another. But going through the list awhile back I saw a few I didn't and one I have been able to find nothing about is "DEAD END – Emerson Bixby (1985) shot on video" Where in the world has this film gone.

IMDB makes my mouth water and I really want to see this. Anyone out there know anything?!!

  5. suprised you haven't seen dead and buried

  6. r* and scratch that...i'm an idiot

  7. Dead and Buried is fantastic. I saw that three times in the cinema when it came out. Gary Sherman really was quite a talent, until the Poltergeist sequels got a hook in him...

  8. Lol i have nearly three out of four of the list in the book. I hate to say this but i m stuck in getting a copy of the Jar, Natas the Reflection or Devil's express. And i want to see them!!!
I have a copy of Sex Wish so that is done.
Stephen, are you sure of the relevance of DAY SANTA CLAUS CRIED, THE - Philip Otto (1980)? Seems like an italian drama to me!

  9. Thanks for drawing my attention to this, John! The IMDB entry has been substantially updated since I compiled this list back in 2006. It was listed with minimal credits as a USA film back then, but is apparently now confirmed as an Italian thriller, with the full credits merged and corrected. I'm striking this sucker off the list now!

  10. Not sure if you're still reading the comments, but you've forgotten a couple of films from your list:

Shadow of the Hawk (1976, George McCowan)
    Wendigo (1978. Paul Kener)
    Sasqua (1975. Channon Scot)
Miss Leslie's Dolls (1972. Joseph Prieto)
The Spirits of Jupiter (1985. Russel Kern)
    Valley of Blood (1973)
    King Monster (1976. Richard Martin)
Scream, Evelyn, Scream (1970, Robert Hensley)
Curse of the Moon Child (1972)
The Hidan of Maukbeiangjow/Invasion of the Girl Snatchers (1973, Lee Jones)
God Bless Dr. Shagetz (1974. Edward Collins, Larry Spiegel, Peter S. Traynor)
Blood Beat (1985, Fabrice A. Zaphiratos)
The Manson Massacre (1970, Kentucky Jones)
    Transformation (1974, Lewis Jackson)

Great book, BTW. I can't wait for Volume 2!

  11. Hi! Thanks for the additions, very much appreciated. Some of these I'm aware of, others are new to me. Funnily enough, as I type I have the UK VHS of WENDIGO in front of me!
SHADOW OF THE HAWK is covered in Volume 1, in the chapter about Normal Thaddeus Vane (he wrote it). However, THE SPIRITS OF JUPITER, KING MONSTER, SCREAM EVELYN SCREAM, INVASION OF THE GIRL SNATCHERS and TRANSFORMATION are new to me. Thanks again!

  12. Going by these two articles (http://www.smogdance.com/2003/hughes.html) & (http://www.ebersolehughes.com/th.html), both of which mention THE NEW WOMEN as being Todd Hughes first FEATURE film, it looks like WAPPER is a short film rather than a feature. It's kind of a shame; I'd love to know what kind of horror is "frothing too much!"

Also, where's JACK THE RIPPER GOES WEST?

  13. You might want to investigate TIME OF THE EAGLE(aka THE DEVIL'S CLONE,1979,D:WILLIAM A. Dial). A weird regional action/horror/drama obscurity with Nazi witchcraft and human experiments. The only known existing print is viewable on youtube as I type this.
A tad torpid in spots, but worth a look(and it was posted by the producer, so further info is just a click away)
    Keep up the excellent work!

  16. Hi Stephen...
Do you know anything about a 1973 U.S. film called THE HOUSE AND THE BRAIN? I assume it is adapted from the Victorian horror classic of the same name. It featured veteran actor Hurd Hatfield, and had a TV network premiere on ABC in 1973. There is virtually nothing available on this title anywhere! Have you seen it?

  17. Hi,
The episode was part of an ABC TV series called 'Wide World Mystery'. The comments section at imdb has some useful info (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202206/usercomments). It seems some of the episodes were borrowed from the British TV series 'Thriller' by Brian Clemens (one of the key writers of 'The Avengers' series), but not House and the Brain. Hope this helps.

  18. Thank you, Stephen...I sort of suspected something to that effect(though it must have been slated for general distribution, as I became aware of it from a 1-sheet poster I saw at a horror convention some years ago...funny that an unreleased film can leave a confusing paper trail of useless promotional material).
BTW... I've long regarded the "Little Girls" number from your POSSESSION project as one of the most deliciously perverse moments in music history. Fucking brilliant, man.

  20. Seeing Dead End is something that makes me sick with envy. Do you have any info on where to find this?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi Chris, DEAD END is one that I added to the list hoping to get a hold of a copy before Volume 2 is finished! As yet I haven't, but if anyone reads this and knows how to get it, please let me know...

  22. Hi Stephen - I didn't see ATTACK OF THE BEAST CREATURES (83/85) on the list. Pretty sure it's of US origin. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088752/

  24. In the 70s and 80s, I knew, worked with, in a few cases interviewed some of the people who made the films on this list. Enjoy your book and looking forward to vol. 2. vokar at live dot com.

  25. Hello Stephen. I wondered if you tell me where i could buy a copy of your book Nightmare USA: The Untold Story of the Exploitation Independents. I am from the UK and have searched online and in bookstores but with no luck.

    Thank you in advance

    Lisa Fox

  26. Hi Vokar - I've emailed you at your given address. Drop me a line if you can.

Lisa, sorry to say the book's now out of print, and will be probably throughout the summer. I hope we'll be doing a new edition some time later this year, depending on how the timing on my Jess Franco project pans out.

  27. Stephen:
I hope you are still reading comments to your first post! I purchased NIGHTMARE USA several years back and have recently been re-reading it. As someone who has read a huge number of horror film study books in his time, I wanted to tell you that your book is one of the very best I've ever read, and certainly must be one of the best movie studies ever written, regardless of genre. I don't know how you managed to uncover so many obscure filmmakers for your in-depth interviews, but I'm glad you did it. As much as I love Universal and Hammer films, I'm much more fascinated by these shadowy corners of the genre. Thank you very much for your efforts in putting together this terrific book, and I am anxiously awaiting Volume 2!
